Once in Mauritius you could spend your entire stay marvelling at the lacy waters of the reef or the endlessly varying colours of the lagoon during the changing light of the day...but the best view of all is from the sky where the wild beauty comes into its own. It can be a real surprise to see the beautiful ravines, the valleys and mountains , the rock formations and crests if you haven’t been further than the beach in front... These views are breathtaking given the height of the highest peak (the Pieter Both) at 823m! Even the lower peaks will reveal an extraordinary beauty which may otherwise be unnoticed.
On the central plateau, the earth is composed of different minerals giving it a slightly reddish orange tint upon which the vegetation stands out: the tender green tones of the sugar fields and the tea plantations, greens of the banana and fig trees, the brightly flowered groves of the flame trees in season. Every river bed shades its banana trees, the travellers’ palms and in the morning washerwomen will be busy in their daily routine. From the sky, you will see day to day activities: the workers in the fields, the salt pan workers, the cane cutters, builders on construction sites which never really seem to get finished, life on the large sugar estates. Mauritius is much more than a bouquet of green, red, brown , yellow but also emeralds, turquoises and cobalt blues: those of the lagoons, brighter, deeper in many hues from the sky than from the land....and much more inspiring and exciting!
