Hunting in Mauritius is a sport mainly practised by locals (owners of sugar estates and their friends) but tourists now have the opportunity to hunt. Hunting season is from May to October and takes place in private estates (Domaine du Chasseur, Wolmar Reserve, Domaine de l’Etoile etc) where hunts are organised from hideouts. Hunting allows the estates to regulate the number of game in the reserves. Only two animals are hunted: the wild pig that live totally in the wild and are not monitored, and the Java stag whose population is constantly being monitored by the slaughtering of a certain percentage of the livestock. The Java stag is quite rare and only found in Mauritius and in New Caledonia, thus interesting for hunters. The easiest kill is a young male of around 1 year and a male of 2 years. The prize stag is an 8 year old male with antlers measuring over 75cm.
DOMAINE DU CHASSEUR
This estate is situated in the Nouvelle France region and is Alain O’Reilly’s latest estate. (Alain O’Reilly is one of the developers of eco tourism in Mauritius). The estate has some of the most beautiful antlers in the region.
DOMINIQUE THEVENEAU
Stag hunting in different regions during the season and also hare hunting all year round.
DOMAINE DE L’ETOILE
This is a magnificent estate known for the quality of its stag and the friendliness of the hunt (women are allowed!). The hunters are posted to designated hideouts in stunning spots and keep watch.
